Resolution is the pixel grid. It is not the same as screen size in inches, and it is not the same as sharpness. Sharpness is pixels per inch (PPI).
If you want the short map for 2026:
- Desktop volume default: 1920 × 1080 (Full HD)
- Better 27-inch monitor default: 2560 × 1440 (1440p / QHD)
- Large monitor / sharp text: 3840 × 2160 (4K)
- Phones: mostly ~1080 to ~1440 pixels on the short side, at 6.1–6.8 inches

Most common desktop resolutions
1920 × 1080 (Full HD)
Still the most common desktop and laptop resolution you will meet in analytics.
Good for: 24-inch office monitors, budget laptops, secondary screens, low-GPU gaming. Watch out: On a 27-inch panel, 1080p looks soft. Pair 1080p with ~24-inch, not with big diagonals.

2560 × 1440 (1440p / QHD)
The sweet spot for many 27-inch monitors and gaming setups.
Good for: Productivity and gaming on 27-inch, sharper UI without 4K scaling drama. Watch out: Needs more GPU than 1080p for high-refresh games.

3840 × 2160 (4K / UHD)
Common on 27–32 inch productivity monitors and TVs.
Good for: Sharp text, photo/video work, large single-panel desks. Watch out: OS scaling (125–200%) is normal. Weak GPUs and bad cables struggle with high refresh.
Examples: Dell U2725QE (27" 4K), Dell U3223QE (32" 4K).
Ultrawide resolutions
Not "more 16:9." Different shape.
- 3440 × 1440: mainstream 34-inch ultrawide (for example Dell U3425WE)
- 3840 × 1600: taller 38-inch class (for example LG 38WN95C-W)
- 5120 × 2160: super-ultrawide productivity panels (for example Dell U4025QW)

1280 × 720 and 8K
720p still exists on cheap and old screens. Treat it as a floor for testing, not a target.
8K exists in specialist and TV contexts. For most desks and websites, it is not a design priority yet.
Most common mobile resolutions
Phones advertise diagonal inches first. The pixel grid usually lands in these bands:
- ~1080 × 2340–2400 class: many mid-range and compact flagships (for example Galaxy S25, Pixel 10)
- ~1200–1284 × 2664–2800 class: common flagship band (for example iPhone 17, OnePlus 15, Honor Magic8 Pro)
- ~1440 × 3120–3200 class: denser large Androids (for example Galaxy S26 Ultra, Xiaomi 15 Ultra)
Physical size context lives in mobile screen sizes (2026). Brand indexes: Apple, Samsung, Google, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus.
Important for web work: CSS layout uses the logical viewport, not the full panel pixel count. A phone can be 2778 px tall physically and still layout at ~402 CSS px wide. Use What is my viewport and viewport vs screen width vs DPR.
What these resolutions mean for everyday users
Office and documents. 1080p on 24-inch is fine. 1440p on 27-inch is the comfort upgrade. 4K helps when you want denser text or a 32-inch panel that would look soft at 1440p.
Gaming. Resolution fights refresh rate for GPU budget. Many gamers pick 1440p on 27-inch so they can keep high frame rates. See refresh rate vs resolution.
Streaming and TV. Sit farther away and PPI drops. 4K on a living-room TV can look excellent while 4K on a close 27-inch monitor is a different experience. Distance matters. Use the viewing distance calculator.

What these resolutions mean for designers and developers
Analytics will show 1920 × 1080 a lot. That does not mean you should design only for it. It means your desktop layout must remain usable there.
Test at least:
- 1920 × 1080 desktop
- 2560 × 1440 desktop
- one phone viewport around 390 × 844
- one large phone viewport around 430 × 932
Images and canvas. Use srcset and account for DPR. A "1080p phone" at 3× DPR still wants high-res assets.
